Opinion: For a meaningful retirement, stay engaged by substitute teaching
Retirement sounds perfect — no meetings, no deadlines, no office politics. I first tried it at 65. That was a decade ago. I failed — repeatedly.Short-term projects were too interesting to pass up. And while my breaks between assignments were relaxing, I wasn’t ready to disengage entirely. I enjoyed the freedom retirement offered, yet I still craved structure, purpose, and a sense of contribution. Now I’ve found an option that comes surprisingly close to the best of both worlds: substitute teaching.
