Analysis: Sunderland avoid ruing wasteful first half
Sunderland looked like they would rue failing to take advantage of their first-half dominance. Sunderland had so much of the ball in and around Brentford's area in the opening 45 minutes with 25 touches inside the box. Regis le Bris' side seemed stunned by Brentford's changes at the break and it took them a while to really get to grips with the game again in the second half.

Brentford 1-1 Sunderland: What Andrews said
Brentford have given away more penalties than any other side in the Premier League since the start of last season (nine), conceding from six of them. Brentford are unbeaten in each of their last 14 Premier League games in which they've opened the scoring (won, drawn five), though they have drawn four of their last six such games.

Brentford v Sunderland: Key stats and talking points
Brentford are aiming to maintain their unbeaten start against a Sunderland side with one win and one defeat so far. BBC Sport takes a look at the key themes ahead of their clash at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday (15:00 BST). It's been a promising start to the season for the Bees, who have a win and a draw from their first two matches and were a bit unlucky to be pegged back by Leeds last weekend.
Fulham v Crystal Palace: Key stats and talking points
Fulham's campaign got off to the worst possible start when they conceded to neighbours Chelsea just 30 seconds into their opening match. Defeat by the Blues was followed by another at Sunderland and while there will be no panic at the Cottage as new head coach Alvaro Arbeloa is still settling in, fans might be aware that only twice before have Fulham lost their first three games of a top-flight campaign (1951-52 and 2020-21). Fulham have also struggled against Palace in recent years, winning just two of their last 13 Premier League matches against the Eagles (D6, L5), with neither victory coming on home soil.

'Second season syndrome is lazy punditry'
"I don't think Sunderland will be anywhere near the relegation zone," says sports journalist Ian Murtagh, despite Regis le Bris' side "entering the unknown" after securing European football. The Black Cats have gone from the third tier of English football to the Premier League, and now the Europa League, in just four years. "Sunderland are entering the unknown in the sense that they won't just be playing 40 to 42 games this season, they will be playing over 50 games," Murtagh explained.

After Years Of Mockery, Sunderland Finally Taste Regional Glory!
“Two games. Two wins. Six points. One memorable campaign and one thoroughly underwhelming one,” writes Phil West.
'A very underwhelming campaign'
Now the curtain has come down on the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, here is my end-of-season review - with a look back to what I predicted in August. Chelsea's poor season contained one final insult when they were beaten at Sunderland on the final day, meaning they have no European football under new manager Xabi Alonso next season. Liam Rosenior lasted only three months amid acrimony - a head coach out of his depth - before Calum McFarlane stepped in to take Chelsea to the FA Cup final, which they lost to Manchester City.
Summer investment pays off for Black Cats
Sunderland spent £161m on 15 new players after gaining promotion to the Premier League. The season before, the three promoted sides - Leicester, Southampton and Ipswich - spent a combined £276.5m but returned to the Championship with the lowest combined points total of relegated sides in Premier League history. Essentially, spending big is no guarantee of survival.
Sunderland 2-1 Chelsea: What Le Bris said
Sunderland won 54 Premier League points this season, the most by a newly promoted side since Leeds United in 2020-21 (59 points), while their seventh place finish is the best by a newly promoted team since Wolves in 2018-19 (7th). The Black Cats are one of just three sides that didn't lose a single Premier League game when scoring first in 2025-26 (P13 W8 D5), alongside Manchester United and Nottingham Forest.
Analysis: Bedlam at Stadium of Light
In truth, the party had been ongoing hours before kick-off but it was bedlam by the end of the match, as fans held heads in hands in disbelief at their remarkable achievement. It is only four years since the Black Cats were in League One, with Luke O'Nien and Trai Hume having been with them throughout the journey and combining here for the first goal. Having only gone up via the Championship play-offs, it is little surprise many predicted Sunderland would struggle.
Sunderland defy expectation to secure European football against dismal Chelsea
A year to the day after they won the Championship play-off final and just four years after they escaped League One, Sunderland brought their remarkable Premier League campaign to a close by qualifying for next season’s Europa League.
Super Sunday for Sunderland
Whatever happens this weekend, we will keep the red flag flying high and hopefully taking it across the continent!
Analysis: Black Cats' dream season continues
What a dream season it has been for Regis le Bris' Sunderland side on their return to the top flight for the first time since dropping out of the Premier League in 2016-17. Sunderland's win, which takes them above Everton, leaves them ninth, one point behind Brentford in eighth and two points behind Brighton in seventh, although Chelsea in 10th have a game on the Black Cats. With Manchester City beating Chelsea 1-0 in Saturday's FA Cup final, that means seventh in the Premier League would qualify for the Europa League, with eighth place going into the Conference League.
Everton 1-3 Sunderland: What Moyes said
Merlin Rohl is the very first German player to score for Everton in the Premier League and the newest nationality to strike for the Toffees in the competition since Guinea-Bissau's Beto in December 2023. Everton manager David Moyes has lost his last three Premier League meetings with his former sides.
Should Sunderland expect interest in Brobbey?
There will doubtless be a lot of interest in Sunderland's players this summer following their successful Premier League campaign and the recruitment success of last summer's transfer window. Sunderland has cannily tied most of their players to five year deals which works in both parties favour but especially the club who have no need to sell. Will it be Brian Brobbey?
A Goal Achieved Amid A Season Of Success For Sunderland
“Reaching forty seven points given the failings of newly-promoted sides in recent times is no mean feat.”
Sutton's predictions: Wolves v Sunderland
I'm maybe being foolish here but I am backing Sunderland to respond after their shocker at home to Nottingham Forest last time out. Black Cats boss Regis le Bris would have been "Regis le Bristle" after that woeful home display and his team looked like they were on the beach. To continue the maritime theme, Wolves have looked like a fish out of water for most of this Premier League campaign.
Gabbiadini calls for perspective
Former Sunderland striker Marco Gabbiadini believes there is no point in criticising Regis le Bris' side after their 5-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest last Friday as they have been "consistent" and "relentless" in their first season back in the Premier League. The Black Cats struggled for much of the game as Forest ran riot in the first half and took an insurmountable 4-0 lead before Elliot Anderson added another in the second half to hand Sunderland their biggest loss this season.

Sunderland near another landmark
Sunderland go to Aston Villa with a carrot dangling this weekend. The Black Cats have won 46 points in the Premier League, a tally which is already their most in a top-flight season since 2010-11 (47). Regis le Bris' side have 12 wins in the Premier League during the campaign.

Sutton's predictions: Sunderland v Tottenham
What's Roberto de Zerbi going to do with Tottenham and how will he set them up? The whole situation is just odd, with De Zerbi securing a five-year contract despite only hanging around for more than two years at one of his previous eight clubs. Sunderland's form at the Stadium of Light has dipped a bit since they lost their unbeaten home record against Liverpool in February, but the Black Cats will be buoyant after beating Newcastle last time out.

Sunderland’s Travelling Blueprint Is Working!
“With nine points left to play for away from home, it’ll be interesting to see how many more we pick up.”
Newcastle should resist any calls for change
The biggest game of the weekend was Newcastle v Sunderland - well, it was in the north east, anyway. For all the passion, and there was plenty on show, as well as the usual late drama, in the end it was Sunderland winning to go 11th leaving their neighbours down in 12th. For Sunderland it is still a fine season as a promoted side, but for Newcastle this is disappointing mid-table mediocrity following defeat in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup against Manchester City and in the Champions League against Barcelona.
