'I didn't realise probably how good he was'
James Garner joined Everton for an initial fee of only £9m from Manchester United in 2022, having spent the previous season on loan helping Nottingham Forest get promoted to the Premier League. The academy graduate did not make a Premier League start for United. After taking two seasons to settle at Everton under Frank Lampard and then Sean Dyche amid a backdrop of financial problems and points deductions, the 2025-26 campaign proved to be a watershed moment.
Man Utd need positive end to week
Michael Carrick really needs a good end to this week. The extended first international break of the new season means after Manchester United's trip to Fulham on Sunday, there will be a three-week gap to the home match with Tottenham on 10 October. A place in the Carabao Cup fourth round – to be played at the end of October – and a victory at Craven Cottage, would take some of the edge away from the current debate.
What next for Gabriel and Man Utd?

'Brighton can go to Man Utd and turn them over'
Former Brighton forward Warren Aspinall believes the Seagulls can beat Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. Fabian Hurzeler's side are fifth in the Premier League after two wins from their opening four games. Despite also being in the Conference League this season, Aspinall believes his former side, who beat Coventry City 5-0 on Sunday, can still have a good cup run.
Man Utd's Gabriel in limbo
Had the situation worked out differently, 15-year-old JJ Gabriel would have been preparing for his Manchester United debut tonight and potentially becoming the club's youngest player. Instead, the young forward is in limbo, having asked United for his registration to be cancelled, which would allow him to join one of the many clubs across Europe who are very keen to sign him.
Why are Man Utd better without the ball?
Under Michael Carrick, Manchester United average 1.5 points per game when they have more than 50% of the ball. When they have less than 50%, this number is 2.6.

'He may well just feel at home' - how Maresca is settling in at Man City
The Manchester derby win is a "big feather in Enzo Maresca's cap", says former Premier League striker Chris Sutton. Manchester City beat Manchester United 1-0 on Sunday, despite going down to 10 men midway through the first half, and the victory has helped prove Maresca's tactical credentials. "The most damning thing for United was that you always felt City had more control and were carrying more of a threat," Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club.
Chastening night for Newcastle
No side will relish coming up against Dominic Calvert-Lewin and this aggressive Leeds outfit at Elland Road this season. In fact, only Arsenal (52), Manchester City (50), Manchester United (45) and Bournemouth (37) have won more Premier League points in 2026 than Leeds United (35), with the Whites suffering just a single defeat across their past 13 league matches. Newcastle had previously made a good start under head coach Matthias Jaissle, following so much change in the summer, and were unbeaten in their opening five games in all competitions before this reality check.
How Maresca is tackling football's impossible job
Enzo Maresca seemingly took on an impossible job in the summer when replacing the legendary Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, but is making it look an easy task in the early stages of his tenure.

Seeing red in Manchester derby
In the Manchester derby there were two huge calls and, again, VAR somehow managed to get both wrong. Well, the first was at the very least morally wrong as opposed to totally wrong by the letter of the law. Bruno Fernandes sneakily kicked Phil Foden while the Manchester City man was defenceless on the ground.
Reason for optimism
Two wins and two draws have taken Leeds up to third in the Premier League after four games, with only Manchester City and Arsenal having more points. After securing safety on their return to the top flight last season with a 14th-place finish, this is a start Leeds fans would have dreamed of. In fact, only in 1995-96, 1998-99, 2001-02, and now 2026-27 have Leeds avoided defeat in each of their first four in the competition in the Premier League era.
Staff Takeaways: Manchester United 0-1 Manchester City
Colin: Frustrations of squad building were laid bare The Manchester Derby was on Sunday was a match where Manchester United should have gotten more and didn’t. On top of that, there was a highly controversial goal allowed for the Citizens as well as about 30 minutes of play in which they were down a man. […]
Foden needs to be more composed
Manchester City captain Ruben Dias say Phil Foden needed to be "more controlled and composed" when provoked by Bruno Fernandes in Sunday's Manchester derby. Foden was sent off for violent conduct after kicking out at Fernandes on the floor after being fouled and kicked himself by the Manchester United skipper. "In the moment I felt it was a bit harsh because my perception was Bruno kicks Phil and then he has a rushed reaction and maybe kicks him back," Dias said.
'City seemed to enjoy the challenge'
Sunday's result was a statement win for Manchester City's new manager Enzo Maresca, who got his tactics spot on, but his team's performance will have showed him exactly what they are about. City are used to always having most of the ball but they were fine without it against Manchester United. That is down to leadership and communication - not just from the manager, but from the players on the field. Maresca deserves plenty of credit for his decisions too, but he must be thinking he is a lucky man for having the group of players he does, because their intelligence and resilience was key.
VAR is not the problem, the people running it are
The shocking VAR mistake in the Manchester derby, allowing Erling Haaland’s winning goal, will renew calls for the system to be scrapped. After all, without it, the correct decision was effectively made – the assistant referee raised his flag for offside – and we would not have had the seemingly interminable wait while the incident was reviewed and reviewed and reviewed and the right call was inexplicably overturned.

Arbeloa on Sessegnon injury, being 'self-demanding' and Affengruber
Fulham boss Alvaro Arbeloa has been speaking to the media before Tuesday's Carabao Cup third-round fixture against West Ham United at London Stadium (kick-off 19:45 BST). Ryan Sessegnon is dealing with a "small groin problem", which explains his exclusion from the matchday squad last time out. The club are waiting on his scan results, but he won't be available for the cup tie, confirmed Arbeloa, and he will be assessed again before Sunday's game against Manchester United.

Man Utd's Martinez ready for Haaland derby test
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez is not taking his previous success against Erling Haaland as proof it will happen again at Old Trafford tomorrow. Despite the relative size difference, Argentina centre-back Martinez has a decent record against the prolific Manchester City man. Ayyoub Bouaddi belied his age with a mature Champions League performance on his first Manchester City start to showcase why the club were so intent on signing the 18-year-old. Erling Haaland will take the plaudits for his two goals, but it was Bouaddi who caught the eye with a tidy and assured performance in the middle of the park, signalling early signs that Rodri may not be too sorely missed after his departure. "His age, his game – he looks absolutely born to do it," former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin said on BBC Radio 5 Live during the game.
2004-05 deja-vu - Can Moyes inspire another fine finish?
Deadline day may have left Everton fans feeling disillusioned, but the side is four games into the season and remains unbeaten, nine goals scored, including two in added time to secure a point. After what was a chaotic close to the transfer window, even by the Toffees' own standards, the performance against Manchester United ironically saw the summer signings playing a key role in the fight. Jack Grealish and Hayden Hackney came on from the bench to turn the game on its head, Tyrique George scored to equalise before the visitors went back in front, and it was Ainsley Maitland-Niles with a stunning strike to secure the draw in the final few seconds.

Man Utd fans group call for derby-day ticket protest
The 1958 Manchester United fans' group is organising a protest ahead of Sunday's derby clash with Manchester City in protest at the club's handing of its ticket touting crackdown. United identified numerous instances of what they felt was ticket touting and in July placed restrictions on a large number of accounts and demanded details for why single devices were being used for multiple accounts, amid a threat of them being withdrawn.
