A UCLA-led study published in Science Advances in 2025 found that African forest elephants are indispensable planters of ebony trees — the wood traditionally used for piano keys and guitar fretboards — and in parts of the Congo Basin where elephants have been hunted out, there are 68 percent fewer ebony saplings
