The Distant World Of Chariklo's Ring System Has Changed In A Matter Of Years, And Astronomers Are Not Sure Why

Not long ago, astronomers were surprised to find rings around the distant world of Chariklo. Looking at it again using the JWST, the rings have surprised us once more.

Before JWST began science operations, a dust-sized particle struck one segment of its 6.5-metre mirror at hypervelocity and left an uncorrectable deformation — damage revealed because Webb can detect nanometre-scale changes in its own optical surface.

Webb detected a permanent deformation on mirror segment C3 through nanometre-scale wavefront sensing, corrected part of it and remained well inside requirements.

JWST finds early galaxies may be 4 times more massive than thought

Astronomers using JWST have discovered that massive early galaxies contain far more small, faint stars than expected. That hidden population could make some of these galaxies three to four times more massive than previous estimates. The finding makes it even harder to explain how enormous, mature galaxies formed so soon after the Big Bang. It could also suggest that planets around low-mass stars were more common in the early universe than scientists realized.

Neptune’s tiny moons may be the wreckage of shattered ancient worlds

JWST has uncovered surprising clues that Neptune’s strange inner moons may be the wreckage of an ancient cosmic catastrophe. Researchers detected clay-like minerals on Larissa, Galatea, and Neptune’s rings that form in the presence of liquid water—yet the moons themselves show no obvious water ice. The material likely came from deep inside much larger icy moons that were shattered when Triton was captured by Neptune, destroying much of the planet’s original satellite system.

Astronomers discover unexplained spin pattern in early galaxies - Futura-Sciences

A consistent pattern in the deep universe Lior Shamir, an associate professor of computer science at Kansas State University, analyzed images of 263 early galaxies captured through the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey. Shamir used quantitative shape analysis to determine the rotation of each galaxy. The data revealed that roughly...

Scientists stunned as JWST finds ice clouds on a giant alien planet

Scientists have discovered unexpected water-ice clouds on a distant, Jupiter-like exoplanet, challenging current atmospheric models. By directly imaging Epsilon Indi Ab with the James Webb Space Telescope, they found less ammonia than expected—likely hidden by thick, patchy clouds. The finding reveals new layers of complexity in giant planets and shows how much we still have to learn.

Scientists just mapped the hidden structure holding the Universe together

Astronomers have produced the most detailed map yet of dark matter, revealing the invisible framework that shaped the Universe long before stars and galaxies formed. Using powerful new observations from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, the research shows how dark matter gathered ordinary matter into dense regions, setting the stage for galaxies like the Milky Way and eventually planets like Earth.
